As with most things during the pandemic, the North Hills High School Drama Club had to get creative with how to produce the annual spring musical. With Songs for a New World, the audience will experience a show unlike any produced on the North Hills stage!
In partnership with Music Theatre International and ShowTix4U.com, the pre-recorded show will be streamed as a “live” event at 7:00pm on Friday, April 16 and Saturday, April 17, 2021. Access to the stream can be purchased for $10 per showing at <insert link here> This contemporary song cycle weaves characters and history together, illuminating the timelessness of self-discovery. It's about one moment. It's about hitting the wall and having to make a choice... or take a stand... or turn around and go back. These are the stories and characters of today, the Songs for a New World. The first musical from Tony Award winner, Jason Robert Brown (Parade, Bridges of Madison County), this moving collection of powerful songs examines life, love and the choices that we make. Brown transports his audience from the deck of a 1492 Spanish sailing ship to a ledge, 57 stories above Fifth Avenue, to meet a startling array of characters that range from a young man who has determined that basketball is his ticket out of the ghetto to a woman whose dream of marrying rich nabs her the man of her dreams... and a soulless marriage. In addition to the song cycle featuring singers and dancers, the streamed production will include performances of several monologues that fit thematically with the songs. Students performers were coached via Zoom, and the monologues will be presented before each act of the show. Rehearsals have taken place following all COVID protocols outlined in the NHSD Athletic & Activities Return to Play Safety Plan. Recording took place over a 4-day period to limit the number of students in one location. Students in the high school tv production classes oversaw the video recording and editing of the final product. |
