Fourteen members of the North Hills High School choral program will join with nearly 300 singers from 24 schools at the fourth annual Allegheny County Chorus Festival on Wednesday, Oct. 14 at Gateway High School. The students are divided into two choirs, a Mixed (SATB) and a Treble (SSA) Ensemble. Teachers from the participating schools share conducting and accompanying responsibilities, and a small portion of the day is devoted to preparing students who may want to audition for PMEA District Chorus by rehearsing the audition selections. The day culminates in a public performance for family and friends at 7 p.m. in the Gateway High School auditorium. Two North Hills High School Choir members will have the opportunity to perform with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra as part of the Hamlisch-Page Student Choir.
Sophomore Jaina Sim and freshman Sophia Giacomino will join "Everything I Know: The Music of Lin Manuel Miranda" concerts taking place at Heinz Hall on October 9-10 at 7:30 p.m. and October 11 at 2:30 p.m. Nearly 40 students from high schools and colleges in the Pittsburgh region come together each year to make the Hamlisch-Page Student Choir. Named after the late former Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh and Pittsburgh Symphony Pops conductors Robert Page and Marvin Hamlisch, the choir began over 25 years ago as a “College All-Star Choir” to join with the symphony. Several years later, the group was expanded to include high school students. Directed by former Junior Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh conductor Christine Hestwood, students rehearse for a month prior to the concerts, then join with the PSO at Heinz Hall for the performances. Participating schools include North Hills, Blackhawk, Central & Oakland Catholic, Deer Lakes, Penn Hills, Riverview, Upper St. Clair, the University of Pittsburgh, and Chatham University. HIGH SCHOOL Drama Club The first Drama Club meeting of the year will take place after school on Thursday, August 27 at 2:00pm in the high school auditorium. An overview of the whole year of activities will take place as well as more specific information about the Fall One Act Plays:
The first Drama Parents meeting will take place on Tuesday, September 22 at 7pm in the high school auditorium. Choir Auditions for the North Hills Singers chamber choir will take place on Wednesday, September 9 from 2-4pm in the Choir Room. Requirements for the auditions will be discussed and rehearsed in choir classes during the week leading up to the auditions. First rehearsal will be a "Fall Retreat" on Saturday, September 19 from 9am-Noon (and will include a provided lunch). The Choir Parent & Family Kick-off Meeting will be held on Tuesday, September 15 at 7pm in the high school auditorium. MIDDLE SCHOOL Choir The after-school ensemble open to all students grades 6-8 in the middle school, Concert Choir, will start up for the year with an informational meeting on Monday, September 14 from 3-4pm in Room A011. The schedule of rehearsals/time commitment will be discussed, song for part placement will be taught, and a permission form for parents to complete will be distributed at this meeting. Any student who is interested in being part of the group is invited to this meeting regardless of music class during the day -- band, chorus, orchestra, and general music. Part placements will take place on Wednesdays, September 16 and 23 from 3-4pm and the group will begin rehearsals the following Wednesday, September 30. Drama Club October is when things begin for our middle school drama club's winter musical. An informational meeting about auditions for the cast and how to participate as crew members will be held on Thursday, October 1 from 3:00-4:00pm in the middle school auditorium.
