Cabaret Night - March 3

2/20/2017

Picture
The sixth annual Cabaret Night sponsored by the Choral Parents Association of NHSD will take place on March 3 at 7 p.m in the high school cafeteria. The cafeteria will be transformed into a coffee shop with an “open mic night” feel to it. Admission is $5, which includes light refreshments provided by the choral parents. The evening features solos, duets, and small groups from the choirs in a relaxed setting. Students select their own music and prepare mostly on their own. Styles represented include pop, Broadway, and original compositions sung a cappella, with piano or guitar.

“This event has grown in popularity over the past several years as more students have participated and word has gotten out, said Shaun Cloonan, high school choral director and music teacher. “I think giving the students an opportunity to share their own personalities by selecting their own songs is important, and their friends and families enjoy supporting them.”

All proceeds from the event benefit the high school choral program, which includes a tour with the high school music department of the Rock ’n Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland and to Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio, where each ensemble will perform for judged competitive ratings at the Music in the Parks festival.

NH Singers at Fox Chapel Feb. 16

2/14/2017

The North Hills Singers, a 32-member auditioned mixed vocal ensemble from the high school choral program, will participate in the 33rd annual Fox Chapel Concert Choir Invitational on Feb. 16 at 7 p.m. in the Fox Chapel Area High School auditorium. The evening is intended to be a non-competitive opportunity for choirs in the area to perform for each other and to receive comments from music professionals serving as clinicians.

In addition to Fox Chapel and North Hills, small choral ensembles from Bethel Park and Penn Hills High Schools will also join in the program for the evening.  Dr. David Rayl, Director of Choral Organizations at Michigan State University, and Dr. Ryan Beeken, Director of Choral Studies at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, will serve as the clinicians.  They will provide written feedback after each school’s performance, and will also spend 10 minutes on stage working with each choir while the other participating groups and audience members observe.
