2017-18 High School Drama Club Info

7/21/2017

Hello all,

I hope everyone's summer is going well, just a quick couple of details about the musical and the 2017-18 school year in general.

First, because I know you've all been waiting patiently, the spring musical for 2018 will be Dames at Sea. It's a show I would imagine most of you have not heard of except to see the poster in the choir room from the production we staged in 2008. It's a show with a lot of good parts and though if you read about it you will notice that when performed either on or Off-Broadway it's staged with only seven actors, please do not be alarmed by this. When the show is performed by high schools, universities, or community theaters the material provides for a flexible ensemble size. So I can assure you all that our cast size will be our average, meaning more than thirty students. The show is a dance show that features some tap numbers but is not exclusively tap, so if tap dancing isn't your strong suit, please don't be nervous. We feel Dames at Sea provides a number of great opportunities for this year's group, and we're all excited about the choice. I'm sure you'll all look it up and download the music (if you are downloading from iTunes, the version that is closest to the material we'll be using is the original off-broadway cast recording), and if you have any questions please do feel free to contact me.

Now for some routine house cleaning items. The first meeting of the year for the Drama Club will take place August 24th after school in the auditorium where we'll give you all more details about the year and choose officers. There will also be another audition workshop on Saturday, August 26th at 9:30 for anyone who would like to attend. We are going to try to build on what we did at last year's workshop to make it worth attending not only for new students but returning ones as well. That will lead into auditions for Pride and Prejudice on Thursday, August 31st and Friday, September 1st.

Also, there is one important change from what we told some of you at the close of last year, the dates for the fall play have been moved up one week from the original plan. The correct dates for the play will be Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, November 9th, 10th, and 11th, with a matinee on Saturday the 11th.

Finally, I think most of you are aware, but for those of you who aren't, Miss Sarazen will be holding a workshop this summer that will feature, among other things, work on at least one of the songs from Dames at Sea. I think this would be a great opportunity for you all, and if you're interested in attending or would like more information about it, please contact Miss Sarazen and she can give you more details.

That's all I have for now, there will be more information as we get closer to the start of the year, but we wanted to let you know about the musical as soon as we were able. Again, I hope you're all having a good summer, and please do let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks,
Kevin Richey
