Madrigal Dinner 2016

11/28/2016

NH Choirs Madrigal Dinner Returns This Holiday Season with
“The Peasant, the Prince, the Boot, and the Mirror”

The North Hills High School choral program will hold the sixth annual Madrigal Dinner on Dec. 10 at 6:30 p.m. at the St. Athanasius Church social hall at 7 Chalfonte Ave. in West View. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students and can be reserved online here or by calling the North Hills Athletics and Activities office at 412-318-1438. Seating is limited, so reservations are strongly encouraged. Doors open at 6 p.m. The fundraising event is sponsored by the North Hills Choral Parents Association.

The evening will include a home-cooked pasta meal served by choir members, while the Madrigal Players will present a 15th century-style skit in period costumes with music provided by the Madrigal Choir comprised of North Hills students. This year’s skit, “The Peasant, the Prince, the Boot, and the Mirror,” involves a search for a pretender to the throne to replace the aging king, and an audience member just might fit the bill, or the Royal Boot as this case may be. Hilarity ensues as the action turns into a drama-filled courtroom, a mix-up in the Royal Nursery, and the mirror finally showing who will be the next king.

A Madrigal dinner is a 21st century recreation of the Renaissance feasts held in the great baronial halls throughout England during the twelve days of Christmas. The feasts were filled with stunning pageantry, bawdy humor, endless amounts of succulent food and extraordinary music.

Raffle baskets will be available during the evening. Proceeds will benefit the North Hills Choral Program’s continuing activities, including this year’s music department performance tour to Ohio to compete in the Music in the Parks festival at Cedar Point and a tour of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland.

Freshmen Sing at Fall Festivals

11/11/2016

The annual choral festivals for singers in grades 6-9 sponsored by the Southwest Region of the American Choral Directors Association of Pennsylvania take place in November.  Mucho Macho Music brings together boys from the region to sing in an environment where they can explore their changing voices while making music together.  This year’s festival will take place on Nov. 18 at East Allegheny High School.  The guest conductor is Dr. Brian Winnie, director of choral activities & voice at Southwestern College in Kansas.  Additionally, the California University men’s a cappella group Vulcanize will serve as featured guest performers, and the men will join with the student participants throughout the day.  Freshmen singers from the North Hills High School Symphonic Choir selected to participate are Ryan Martin and Emerson Spear.

The “sister” festival to Mucho Macho is the Sweet Harmony Festival.  Set up in the same way, Sweet Harmony celebrates the music of women’s choirs, allowing girls in grades 6-9 to share in singing while learning from a guest conductor and collegiate ensemble.  Sweet Harmony was held on Nov. 4 at West Allegheny High School.  This year’s guest conductor was Dr. Caron Daley, director of choral activities at Duquesne University, and the guest ensemble was the University of Pittsburgh Women’s Choral Ensemble.  Freshmen singers from the North Hills High School Women’s Choir selected to participate were Jane Fusco, MacKenzie Mallory, and Katie Swab.

Founded in 1959, the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) is a nonprofit music-education organization whose expressed purposes outline the association’s dedication to the advancement of choral music.  The mission of ACDA is to inspire excellence in choral music through education, performance, composition, and advocacy.

North Hills High School Drama Club will present the first-ever performance of the comedy “The Bringham Review” on Nov. 17 to 19 at 7:30 p.m. in the North Hills High School auditorium. A special free senior citizen matinee will be held on Nov. 19 at 1:30 p.m.

Written by North Hills alum Rob Speer and Kevin Richey, “The Bringham Review” tells the story of The Bringham Inn. The inn is well past its prime, but it remains home to some of the most interesting characters in town. When they get news that a reviewer is coming to write an article on their quaint hotel, they see an opportunity to fix all of their problems in one weekend. The only question—how do they hide the hotel’s, and their own, many flaws to get a good review? Will they get the review they’ve all been hoping to have, or will the reviewer see through their plots and schemes?

Tickets for the evening productions are $6 for adults and $4 for students and senior citizens. Tickets can be purchased at the door for all performances.
Senior citizens who reside in North Hills School District may attend the matinee for free on Nov. 19 at 1:30 p.m. by reserving a ticket. To reserve a senior citizen matinee ticket, contact North Hills School District Activities Coordinator Chelle Zimmerman at 412-318-1438 or [email protected].
